Yamaha U Series

The U Series has been the world’s most popular upright for over half a century, and it remains the instrument other uprights are measured against. Both models are crafted by Yamaha in Kakegawa, Japan, with a solid spruce soundboard hand-selected at the Kitami Mill in Hokkaido, Japan, a V-Pro Vacuum Shield Mold frame built at the Iwata Forge in Japan, five spruce back posts, and the patented Yamaha aluminum action rail that holds regulation through shifts in humidity and temperature. Two heights, one standard: the 48-inch U1 and the 52-inch U3.

Yamaha U1 Upright Pianos

At 48 inches, the U1 is the upright that built Yamaha’s reputation, a perennial favorite among discerning pianists that sets the standards by which many other upright pianos are measured. Made in Japan, it pairs the hand-selected solid spruce soundboard from the Kitami Mill with pure copper bass strings wound by Yamaha artisans in Kakegawa and the V-Pro frame, delivering the precise, responsive touch and clear, full-bodied tone the series is known for. It is the professional upright in its most essential form.

Yamaha U3 Upright Pianos

The U3 stands four inches taller than the U1, and the extra height is the point. An expansive soundboard and acoustic chamber give the 131 cm (52″) U3 extended power and projection, with the peerless tonal and expressive control of the legendary Yamaha action. It carries the same hand-selected solid spruce soundboard, the same V-Pro frame, and the same hand-wound copper bass strings as the U1. For the player who wants more volume and low-end depth without leaving the U Series, the U3 is the answer.

U Series Silent Pianos

A U Series Silent piano is a complete acoustic U1 or U3 with Yamaha’s SH3 type SILENT Piano system built in. With the system engaged, the strings stay quiet, and you hear a sampled voice through headphones instead of the room. That voice is drawn from the first and only silent system in the industry equipped with sound sampled from the Yamaha CFX full-size concert grand piano. Play at full acoustic volume by day and in complete privacy at night, on the same instrument.

U Series Disklavier Piano

The DU1 ENST is a U1 fitted with Yamaha’s ENSPIRE ST system, a reproducing piano that captures your performance and plays it back on its own keys. It provides full recording and playback functionality, the patented Yamaha SILENT Piano System, and DSP Servo Drive System. Stream or load a performance and watch the keys move, or record your own playing note for note. ENSPIRE ST is offered on the U1, the cornerstone of the series.

U Series Transacoustic Pianos

A U Series TransAcoustic, the U1 TA3 or U3 TA3, is a true acoustic piano that uses its soundboard to naturally amplify digital sounds. An ultra-light transducer turns digital sounds into vibrations and applies them directly to the soundboard, so voices, including the Yamaha CFX and Bösendorfer Imperial concert grands, resonate through real wood rather than external speakers, at any volume you choose. Play acoustically, adjust the digital volume, switch to headphones, or connect a smart device over Bluetooth. TA3 offers 25 playable digital voices and is available on the U1 and U3, all without giving up the tone of a real Yamaha upright.
